Lompoc, Santa Barbara County
Vandenberg Space Force Base, which began in 1941 as an Army training camp, wraps around Lompoc on the north and west. Rockets have been launched from its coastal pads since 1958, sending satellites south over the open ocean into polar orbit. East of town, La Purisima Mission State Historic Park preserves the most completely restored of the California missions.
